From INSET to Impact: Making Professional Learning Stick
We’re back in the swing of the new school year. Those exciting INSET days may already feel like a distant memory, and the real challenge begins: how do we keep professional development meaningful throughout the year?.
This blog post draws on key ideas from Chapter 5 of my book, “A School Leader’s Guide to Leading Professional Development”. I argue that INSET should never stand alone. Effective CPD must be intentional, well-sequenced, and rooted in collaboration, directly connected to school priorities and designed to give teachers and leaders the time and space to reflect, learn, and apply strategies in practice.
The Role of the Leadership Hub
To build on the ideas from the book, with the help of my friends, I’ve also helped create The Leadership Hub — a growing library of fortnightly CPD and school improvement resources designed specifically for international schools. It brings together ready-to-use PD packs, leadership checklists, webinars, and scenario-based training, all in one place. I aimed to make it easier for schools to build an ongoing, meaningful CPD programme that supports every member of staff, whatever their role.

Final Thought
INSET days can be powerful — but only if they’re part of a bigger, well-planned CPD strategy. With the right resources and culture, professional learning becomes something teachers look forward to and that truly drives improvement.
