Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading

Description

Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading

Strong reading underpins success in every subject, yet many students struggle to access complex texts beyond English. This practical, evidence-informed course supports teachers and leaders to develop confident readers across the curriculum.

Participants will explore disciplinary literacy and understand how reading demands differ between subjects. The course focuses on explicit teaching approaches, including vocabulary development, modelling expert reading, and supporting students to engage with challenging texts. Emphasis is placed on practical strategies that can be implemented immediately in the classroom.

The programme also highlights the importance of curriculum design, ensuring reading is deliberately planned and embedded rather than treated as an add-on. Leaders will be supported to take a coherent, whole-school approach that builds consistency and staff confidence.

By the end of the course, participants will have a clear understanding of how to improve students’ reading, enhance access to the curriculum, and support stronger outcomes across subjects.

This course can also be offered as a school improvement support package for senior and middle phase literacy leaders.
