Rethinking Learning with Copilot: A Pedagogical Approach
Rethinking Learning with Copilot:A Pedagogical Approach
Description
As AI tools like Microsoft Copilot become increasingly embedded in classrooms, the challenge is no longer access, but pedagogy. This session explores how teachers can move beyond using AI as an answer generator and instead use it to design deeper, more effective learning experiences.
The session introduces a clear framework built around three core practices: questioning, explaining, and practice. Through practical examples and live prompt design, participants will see how Copilot can be used to generate structured questioning sequences, multiple explanations adapted to different levels, and scenario-based tasks that promote application and reasoning.
A strong emphasis is placed on maintaining cognitive challenge. The session will demonstrate how to avoid common pitfalls such as over-reliance on AI outputs, and how to ensure that thinking remains with the learner. The concept of human-mediated AI is central throughout, positioning the teacher as the designer, guide, and decision-maker in the learning process.
Participants will leave with practical strategies and ready-to-use prompts that can be implemented immediately across a range of subjects.
Learning Objectives
Design prompts that shift Copilot from generating answers to supporting student thinking
Use AI to create structured questioning sequences, multiple explanations, and applied practice tasks
Identify when AI use enhances learning versus when it risks reducing cognitive effort
Apply a human-mediated approach to AI, where the teacher retains control over task design and learning outcomes
Implement immediately usable classroom strategies using Copilot for questioning, explanation, and practice

About the Presenter
Jérôme Nogues
Jérôme is an experienced educator and education technology specialist with over 20 years of classroom experience. He works at the intersection of pedagogy and emerging technologies, supporting schools and organisations in integrating AI in ways that enhance learning rather than replace it.
He delivers CPD nationally and internationally, focusing on the human-mediated use of AI, adaptive teaching, and the design of meaningful learning experiences. His work emphasises maintaining cognitive challenge and developing students’ ability to think critically in an AI-rich environment.
Alongside his work in educational technology, Jérôme is a specialist in language teaching, with extensive experience teaching French and designing curriculum resources. This dual expertise informs his approach, combining strong pedagogical foundations with practical, technology-driven strategies that are transferable across subjects.
