Teaching and Learning: Teaching Phonics and Early Literacy Skills for EAL Learners

Description

This webinar series explores effective ways to teach phonics and early literacy skills to EAL learners. In Part 1, we’ll outline simple, evidence-informed strategies that help children decode new words, build vocabulary, and develop reading confidence—whether they are beginners in English or further along in their language learning journey.

Part 2, available to Leadership Hub members, will take these ideas a step further with a short reflection activity designed to help you apply the strategies in your own context. You’ll consider what’s already working, identify quick wins, and decide on one classroom change to implement over the next few weeks.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key principles of effective phonics instruction for EAL learners.
  • Use practical strategies to support decoding, vocabulary development and early reading confidence.
  • Adapt phonics activities to meet the needs of learners at different stages of English language development.
  • Apply simple assessment and monitoring approaches to track early literacy progress.
  • Reflect on current practice and identify one or two small changes to trial in their own classroom.
